Summary: When your world is a cornucopia of bonkers architecture and twisted imagery, of course people aren't going to be who they seem. In the case of Dr. Caligari and his lumbering assistant Cesare, they made for a duo in the perfect area for insanity.
History: There was a time when Dr. Caligari wasn't Caligari at all. He was once a rather sane asylum director before he came across a man named Caligari who used mystical powers to raise a somnambulist (a man who sleeps for years without aging) to kill those he hates. Obsessed with this kind of power now, the director took up the title and got a somnambulist of his own in the form of inmate Caesar. Since then, he's been showing Cesare around, using him to kill whoever he doesn't like.
Notable Kills: Nothing special.
Final Fate: Cesare becomes obsessed with a girl he was sent to kill, and dies from lack of sleep. Caligari despairs upon hearing about his death, and gets committed to his own asylum. BUT WAIT! It was all the delusional story of one of his inmates. And the real Dr. Caligari is actually a swell guy, as is Caesar.
Powers/Abilities: Cesare's really strong, but not much else. He might be able to predict the future, though.
Weakness: Anything conventional, though Caesar can't be awake for too long.
Scariness Factor: 2.5-Cesare's a little intimidating as a hitman, but these guys are a bit mundane to be much of a fright. Still, it's all in a madman's head, so it sort of fits.
Trivia: -There was originally going to be no twist about Caligari not being insane, but rules back then dictated that an authority figure can't be a symbol of disgust in a work of fiction.
-Somnambulism basically translates to sleepwalking, and it's a very real condition for some people that leads to them performing simple, or even complex, tasks while fast asleep.
